Serbia
Serbia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest for years as part of Yugoslavia. Between 1961 and 1992 the entries for Yugoslavia were sung in Serbian six times. From 1993 on most of the former republics started to participate independently (after the split from Yugoslavia), but for years Serbia and Montenegro were excluded, because of the war in the Balkans. When in 2003 this boycott got lifted, Serbia participated for a few years as part of the confederation Serbia and Montenegro. Montenegro separated from Serbia in 2006 and since 2007 both countries entered individually.
Serbia’s debut in 2007 immediately led to a victory; Marija Šerifović sang her song Molitva to a first place. In the folllowing years Serbia most of the times reached the final, but in 2012 there was a beautiful third place finish for the very popular singer Željko Joksimović.
