Luxembourg
Luxembourg was one of the founders of the Eurovision Song Contest and thus participated from the first edition (1956) onwards. The country was very successful in the first decades, winning as many as five times. Specifically, the first four winning songs became Eurovision classics: Nous les amoureux (1961), Poupée de cire, poupée de son (1965), Après toi (1972), and Tu te reconnaîtras (1973).
The last victory was in 1983, and afterwards, the results declined. After the country was required to skip a year in 1994, it decided to stop participating. To this day, despite various protests, attempts, and plans, there is no return in sight. This is largely due to financial reasons: Luxembourg is a wealthy country, and Eurovision costs are calculated based on a country's GDP, but the Luxembourgish broadcaster has a much smaller budget.
Many of the artists who represented the microstate did not come from Luxembourg itself. Only for 9 of the 37 songs was a native resident on stage. Despite the halted participation, the festival remains popular in the country: a Eurovision Gala Night was regularly organized until 2015.
